I purchased a video on watercolor painting taught by Sue Archer (see this post for more info) and I wanted to try some of the techniques highlighted in it. Sue does close ups of her subject, uses white highlights and dark backgrounds very effectively, so I decided to try the same in my painting.
These strawberries were painted using wet on wet techniques and adding a very dark background (also wet on wet).
I learned a lot from this first try, but I still have a long way to go to skillfully work with watercolor. I decided to post the painting on my blog so that I could see my progress over time (and so that you could follow along too!)
Strawberry season is just around the corner here in California – after working on these I can’t wait!

Beautiful! Love the use of retaining the white for highlights. I still have to practice this.

Thanks you! This is an extreme use of white but it was fun to try!
